Our full-color coffee table recounting the beauty and history of the Florida Trail: The Florida Trail: Florida’s National Scenic Trail
A ribbon of federally-protected footpath stretching 1,400 miles across the state of Florida between two national parks, Big Cypress National Preserve and Gulf Islands National Seashore, the Florida Trail is a National Scenic Trail like no other. Founded in 1966, the Florida Trail became part of the National Trail System in 1983. We spent a decade interviewing trail maintainers, key volunteers, and hikers, and dug through the archives of the Florida Trail Association to pull together this comprehensive history of your National Scenic Trail.
Our personal involvement with the trail goes back almost to its founding. Becoming a member of the Florida Trail Association while still a Boy Scout, John earned his backpacking merit badge on the newly built Florida Trail in the Ocala National Forest, and continued to hike on it for decades. Sandra has written many guidebooks to the trail since 2002. Joining the organization in 1999, she volunteered as a trail maintainer and activity leader as well as in leadership positions, and served as the Communications Director of the Florida Trail Association between 2003-2008. She brings an insider’s perspective to the Florida Trail thanks to the many people she’s known and the many projects she was involved with as both a volunteer and as staff. In 2018, Sandra was honored as a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Trail Association.
